South Asian Heritage Month 2023: Dadima’s Stories at Chiltern Open Air Museum

Dadimas Stories Symposium at Chiltern Open Air Museum in July 2023

As part of South Asian Heritage Month 2023, Chiltern Open Air Museum hosted Dadima’s one-day storytelling symposium embracing nature, health, the countryside, and cultural heritage.

A recording of Dadima’s Stories is available on Soundcloud. Listen now to life-enhancing personal experiences ranging from wild camping to spice-infused memory triggers, the joy of rocks, and the soul-saving power of the hazel tree.

Dadima’s is a friendly, intergenerational walking community, organising monthly walks in the Chilterns, often with inspiring guest speakers. The group aims to encourage people of all cultural backgrounds and all ages to feel welcome in the countryside. Dadima is the Hindu noun for paternal grandmother, and the group encourages all generations to join in.

Chiltern Open Air Museum’s mission is to document the history of the Chilterns through conservation, storytelling, and outreach. The museum’s award-winning accompanied walks programme provides support to sections of the community facing health and access challenges and our Campfire Heritage Stories are told around our campfire by members of our community whose heritage comes from further afield.

On Sunday 24th March 2024, from 2.30pm, a special Campfire Heritage Stories event, supported by The Rothschild Foundation, is taking place. Museum visitors are invited to find out about how the Storytellers (community representatives) came to be in Buckinghamshire and how they have become firmly established in our beautiful county.  Storytellers are Karen Bonner, who is Chief Nurse at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and a descendent of the Windrush generation, and Elizabeth Dench, Sejal Sechdav and BJ Taylor who were born in Jamaica, Uganda and Kenya respectively. Weather permitting, the event will happen around a campfire adding both atmosphere and warmth and an opportunity for marshmallow-toasting!
